Jarvis Furniture Makers

How we work

Whether you choose one of our existing designs, or come to us with your own ideas, each piece of furniture is handmade to order in our small workshop. If you choose one of our standard designs, we’ll give you a clear idea of timescales when you make an order. Commissions can be a little more tricky for timings, but we promise to keep you informed of progress.

We will work with you from design through to finished product to make sure you end up with a piece of furniture you will want to keep in your home for many years. Every item is handcrafted, using traditional methods, blended where appropriate with more modern techniques, always characterised by total attention to detail.

Background

Rob had a varied career path before turning to furniture making in 2006 - from writing computer manuals to shepherding. After studying physics as a mature student at The University of Edinburgh he worked in nuclear power generation. When it was announced that the site was to decommission, rather than continue with a job whose sole remaining purpose was the efficient removal of something that had taken so many years to build and maintain, he decided to leave in order to do something creative.

He is now enjoying the satisfaction of following a process through every stage, from design to completion of a finished product that will hopefully continue long after he’s gone. Rob’s science and engineering background has proved invaluable as a furniture maker, whilst his creative side has been able to flourish. He has come a long way from the early days making furniture in a tiny 1960s garage!
